Unforgettable

It's almost midnight when we drove by the dimly lighted lane. As the rain had stopped just an hour ago, my husband decided to take the corner at a slow, steady pace. As usual, I was prattling non-stop when suddenly I felt the car swerving sharply to the left as though an unseen force had taken hold of the steering. Momentarily speechless, my right hand gripped the dashboard while my left elbow anchored itself to the door. I was bracing for the impact.

"Allah! Allahuakbar!" I shouted. With all his might, my husband tugged the steering to the right. The car then veered sharply to the right and went straight for a tree. on the opposite side of the road. I could see that the car was going to crash and the tree was directly looming in front of me. Again I shouted "Allah! Allahuakbar". As my husband tried to avoid crashing the car head-on, the car scrapped the tree on its left before hitting the hillslope, turned backwards and faced the road again. The soft ground caused the car to grind to a halt. Thank God!

Stunned. We sat in the car to regain our nerves. "Are you okay?" asked my husband. "Still in one piece", I quipped cheekily. He smiled and took a torchlight to access the damage. "Not too bad, just the front bumper and the left door," he said. "You have to climb out through my side if you want to get out 'cos yours is stuck".

I nodded and sat back, thanking God for saving us. Shortly, a taxi and motorcyclist stopped next to us and offered to help. The three men gave a hefty push as I took the wheels and drove the car to the tarmac. As the good samaritans drove off, my husband gazed at me and asked "Do you want to go home or should we proceed with our plan to meet Winnie?"

"Guess...we should. We're okay and let's go for drinks at the mamak stall. I'll call Winnie now." The short meeting that we had with Winnie ended with the usual promise to get more information. As it is, Winnie is a broker and her demands are plenty. In most business dealings, she seldom shows her cards and when she did it will be the barest minimum. Thus, quite a number of deals went up in smoke!

Anyway, after the meeting cum drink we drove home. Half way through the journey, I smelt something's burning. I should say that I do have a keen nose for smell. At first, I kept quiet and prayed hard that the smell would just disappear. Lo and behold, it became more intense as we reached Jalan Genting Klang. Luckily for us, the car's engine stalled as we reached a Shell petrol station. Smoke started to emit from under the hood.

"Oh my God! There's no water, no engine oil," exclaimed my husband after checking the engine. " Thank goodness, the car didn't stall in the middle of the road...or else...massive jam!" he gushed. Yeah! I would hate that especially since it's night and dark.

As we ponder on our next move, a tow truck careened into the petrol station for refuelling. That's it! God had answered our prayers! My husband went over to discuss with the truck driver on towing our car to a friend's workshop in Kampung Baru. After haggling over the price, the wreck was towed.

By this time it's almost two o'clock and taxi was no where in sight at Kampung Baru. I had to make a few calls and finally got hold of my son's friend to help us out. Yeah! In times of need we always sought Afiq's help. He's a great friend indeed!

After taking a few snapshots of the car, we went home. To-date, the car is still in the workshop and should be ready soon. I hope this would be the last and the end of all accidents and it won't happen again. The experience was traumatic and I've yet to fully recover from it.

Thank GOD we're still in one piece!
